What was the hardest part of learning Japanese?
For me, it’s grammar. I find Japanese grammar totally different from English. Another thing is Katakana; I can read Katakana on signs, books, the internet, etc. although I can’t read it fast.
私にとって、文法は一番難しいと思います。後は、カタカナを読むの事。読めるは読めるけど、あまり速くないです。
When did you find yourself enjoying a conversation in Japanese? How long did it take for you to get there?
I moved to Japan with 0 knowledge of Japanese language. The most difficult part was the first 6 months studying basic Japanese. My Japanese language teacher encouraged me to try the advanced class, and I did. We had to read and made some discussions based on Japanese news, novels, and radios. It was the most difficult thing that I have ever challenged myself to do. My skills got improved so fast since I joined the new class. I was able to talk to the taxi drivers, people at the cafe, and more. That’s when I started to enjoy it.
私は日本へ来たとき、一番大変なのは最初6ヶ月です。私の先生は私に上級クラスをチャレンジしてみてを勧めてくれました。日本のニュース、小説、とラジオに基づいて読んだり、聞いたりして、議論するをしなければなりませんでした。 それは私がこれまで最も難しいことでした。 新しいクラスに参加してから、私のスキルはすぐに向上しました。 タクシーの運転手やカフェの人などと話をすることができました。 それは私がそれを楽しみ始めたときです。
What’t the difference between learning Japanese and other languages?
I always love learning languages. In fact, I learned 5 languages since I was young; Thai, English, Chinese, German and French. I really love practice languages. We have a lot of foreign teachers at school so it feels very natural to communicate in every language. Although, when it comes to Japanese, I do feel there’s a pressure especially with using “desu” “masu” and Keigo. Japanese people are very serious about using the right level of language to the right people. While English doesn’t have this rule. So speaking in Japanese without Keigo sounds really normal for foreigners while most Japanese people think it’s very rude. That’s why it makes me nervous when it comes to speaking Japanese.
私は言語の勉強がとても好きです。学生の時代は5つの言語を勉強しました。タイ語、英語、中国語、ドイツ語とフランス語。学校では外国の先生がたくさんありますので、話す練習は毎日できます。それは私にとって、外国語を話すことは普通だと思います。でも、日本語の ”です” ”ます”また敬語を使用プレッシャー感じがあります。 日本人は、正しいレベルの言語を正しい人に使用することに必要があります。英語はこのルールがありません. だから外国人が日本語を普通形で話すのは本当に普通だが、ほとんどの日本人は非常に失礼だと思います。だから、日本語を話すときは緊張します。
「他の言語を話す時は緊張しないけど、日本語を話す時は緊張する」
という部分が非常に印象的でした。
彼女は2年前に来日しました。
インタビューの中にもあるように、当時は0 Japaneseの状態だったようです。
先日、ビザの申請で彼女と行政書士に行きました。
僕と行政書士の会話を8割程度理解していて関心したのを今でも覚えています。
彼女は5ヶ国語を学習してきた経験を活かしウチの講師として働いてもらっています。
初学者から幅広いレベルの生徒さんを担当してもらっています。
